DONDORO by KAUGUMMI BOOKS

The book I've been working on for the past few months is finally printed. It reached my place this morning thanks to the great publisher Bartolomé Sanson. It shows series of photographs taken in collaboration with the japanese pupeteer Hoichi Okamoto. This book is dedicated to him, who sadly passed away this summer. It will be launched in Paris in the next weeks, I'll post more info soon.

Kaugummi books offered me to invite an artist to do a fanzine to go along with the first 100 copies of the book. I asked Sanghon Kim and he produced a beautiful 12 pages fanzine whose title is "Fragments".

Myriorama - Estelle Hanania
I’ve been a fan of Estelle’s work for a while now, and after some unsuccessful attempts to get hold of her work in print form (e.g. shops having sold out after I placed my order) I was delighted to see this publication made available.
Like everything else published by Gottlund Verlag, the book itself is a work of art. The cover is letterpress printed and you can see where the ink has run through to the inside of the front cover on my copy. It lends a certain tactility to the book that engages you, before you’ve even got to the photographs.
The images in this book deal with costume and ritual, and in the same way that these can transport us through time and space, so the book achieves the same in its portrayal of these concepts.
I especially like the shots in which the illusion is spoilt - by trainers showing from underneath the costume, or the photo where the man has taken the mask off to smoke - because these apparent flaws in the façade only heighten the air of surrealism that exists throughout the book.
I love the mysticism that Estelle conjures up in these images, and I can only imagine what it must be like to stumble upon one of these rituals being performed, especially in a car park of all places.
This is a really strong set of images, presented in the typically high Gottlund Verlag tradition, and a wonderful addition to my collection - and yours too?

Family Zines (2010) - Various (Kaugummi)
This set of five zines was launched at an event at Family, Los Angeles. Due to geographical constraints I was unable to attend, but fortunately the zines were made available online and I picked up all 5.
Of these, I was particularly interested in two of the zines, those by David Horvitz and Estelle Hanania. There’s nothing wrong with the other three but as they’re not photography based they simply don’t interest me as much.
David Horvitz is known for his long term art projects (e.g. the 2009 project in which regular mini art project ideas were sent out to email subscribers) and his collaborations with the band Xiu Xiu. This zine contains a series of black and white photos printed onto bright yellow paper. It sounds like it shouldn’t work, but it does. The last image is particularly striking, but all the images contain subjects which are - arguably - mainly yellow, so it’s a clever use of the medium.
I’ve been fascinated with Estelle Hanania’s work for a long time. This zine appears to focus on her work with Attila Csihar, specifically his elaborate costumes. Costumes in general form a theme throughout Estelle’s work, which I’m hoping is explored in more detail in her book which arrived yesterday. The choice of paper doesn’t appear to play as big a part in her zine, but the colour doesn’t detract from the images in any way.
Overall, this is a really nice set of zines. I wish there was more photography in there, but for those who are interested in art zines in general (as opposed to photography zines in particular) there’s a lot to like.
Despite mainly being interested in 2/5 of the set, I’m perfectly happy to support Kaugummi because they work hard consistently to produce superb photography books and zines, and publish artists we might not otherwise have access to.

"L'heure est à l'ambiance tribale 2.0. On s'arrache le dvd d'Avatar pour tenter d'apprivoiser les Na'vi, on envisage de s'offrir l'étagère Cabana des frères Campana(Edr a), et voilà que l'on danse sur le dernier Kelis, bouquet plumes sur la tête et pulsions Eurodance aux pieds. 2010 remet les rituels païens au goût du jour avec une savante touche de science fiction eighties. On aime, sans complexes.

Complexe pourrait être d'ailleurs l'exposition d'Estelle Hanania à la Fat Galerie. On pourrait même pensé l'artiste étrangère avec ses portraits de figures yéti-esques pris sur le vif et ses masques japonais dansant nonchalamment entre ombre et lumière. Le titre de l'exposition, Myriorama, défie la complexité qu'elle sous entend. Populaire au XIXe siècle, le myriorama était un jeu pour enfant où, combinées de façon aléatoires, des cartes peintes formaient un paysage toujours différent. En s'en inspirant, l'artiste française a cassé les codes de la traditionnelle série de photographies. Parking Lot Hydra (des groupes d'hommes bulgares costumés pour des rituels) et Dondoro (photographies réalisées avec le marionnettiste japonais Hoichi Okamoto), les deux sujets de l'exposition, se mélangeant, s'enchevêtrent de manière très fluide. Ensemble elle étonnent, intriguent, excitent, effrayent... révélant des sentiments partagés brassant les notions d'identité et d'appartenance à la nature. Un propos brut et passionant, servi par d'exceptionnels tirages argentiques. Entre vieilles traditions et super modernité, héritage culturel et avant-garde, on dresserait volontiers un totem à Estelle Hanania, notre cheftaine favorite de la photographie contemporaine."

"For the last few years I’ve been thinking of art outside of the context of galleries, sales and museums. I’ve wondered about the power of art and its potential to do something positive. At it’s core, this project is a test, and I hope the result will be an (online) exhibition that people all over the world can enjoy while raising some money for a very good cause in the process. I hope the images collected here inspire people to think about the beauty of the wilderness, and perhaps inspire them to donate to freshair.org. Visiting natural and wilderness areas can be a very peaceful and mind-expanding experience. Hopefully this project helps kids to discover the outdoors. Thanks to all of the artists who contributed to Smoke Bath!"

A bunch of friends gathered in a box, "Recession : A Nonexistent Exhibition" curated by Studio Blanco...Below in order Peter Sutherland, Nicholas Haggard, Camille Vivier, Christophe Brunnquell and me among others.

"During Control+C Festival third edition will be presented the catalogue "Recession / Recessione - A Never Existing Exhibition".
The book is representative of an exhibition that will never exist due to budget limitations: it's comprised of 36 different submissions from artists which express their point of view on the main theme through images, artworks, music and words.

One of my latest work "PARKING LOT HYDRA" will be published and launched in NY by Decathlon Books begining of october. Come and join us during the New York Book Art Fair, October 2-4 at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center.

Decathlon Books is a collaborative publishing project initiated by designer and publisher Duncan Hamilton and photographer and filmmaker Peter Sutherland...The intention is to publish 10 books over a 2 year span featuring artists, writers and photographers.

Exposition à l'initiative de Laurent Danchin critique d'art et écrivain, mise en scène par Martine Lusardy, directrice de la Halle Saint Pierre. Ma contribution à cette aventure a été de me rendre sur place pour photographier quelques unes des sculptures de Chomo.
